Added Sugars aren’t Just Empty Calories but Negative Nutrition with Health Risks

24-06-2024

Sugar intake, particularly from added sugars in processed foods and beverages, plays a significant role in modern health. Excessive consumption of these added sugars is strongly linked to various health issues. One of the most well-documented effects is its contribution to obesity. Sugars, especially in liquid form, can lead to a high-calorie intake without providing the feeling of fullness, thus promoting overeating.

Moreover, high sugar intake is not just a concern for weight management; it’s also a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Consistent high blood sugar levels can lead to insulin resistance, where the body’s cells fail to respond correctly to insulin, necessitating more insulin to manage blood sugar levels. This insulin resistance is a precursor to diabetes.

High sugar consumption also adversely affects cardiovascular health. Diets high in sugar can lead to elevated blood pressure, inflammation, and high levels of triglycerides, increasing the risk of heart disease. Moreover, frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks is detrimental not just to overall health but also to dental health, causing cavities and tooth decay.

You can take control of your health by making simple dietary adjustments. First, opt for a Sugar Detox Diet, then substitute whole foods over processed ones and be aware of hidden sugars in foods. As mentioned in the previous post, research and be prepared to be shocked. If you are a parent, be mindful that some breakfast cereals are 40% sugar, so candy for breakfast—your brain sees sugar as a reward, making you want more of it. Consuming more sugar reinforces that reward, which is habit-forming.

Further, be warned that some processed food manufacturers do not publicize this information and continue to oppose the “added sugars” declaration. Public health authorities and education campaigns have been crucial in empowering individuals to make informed choices and continue to lower the tolerable daily added sugar intake limit. These efforts are not without significant interference from the Sugar Association and associated lobby groups. Read part 2 of this Blog, “Do Not Mess with the Candy Man!”; it is both enlightening and shocking.
